Job Description

Phoenix Art Museum is looking for a Communications and PR Manager to manage, develop, and execute day-to-day and long-term local and national PR strategies to strengthen the Museum’s brand. Serve as co-managing editor and writer for the biannual Members magazine and other donor-related publications in partnership with the Art Director, Brand; the Senior Manager of Interpretation; and the Senior Director of External Affairs. Provide copywriting support on select marketing materials, in partnership with the Marketing and Digital Content Manager. In collaboration with the Senior Director of External Affairs, create and manage communications and PR budget and assist with crisis communications.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  1. In collaboration with the Senior Director of External Affairs, develop short and long-range PR strategies to expand media coverage, local and national reputation, and audiences and revenue.
  2. Oversee the strategy of and implement media relations campaigns, including writing press releases, pitching to media outlets and journalists, securing coverage, responding to media inquiries, coordinating interviews, and building new relationships with journalists to expand coverage.
  3. Perform PR research and regularly report on efficacy of media outreach and pitching.
  4. Develop evergreen PR materials to promote the PhxArt brand, including press kits, institutional messaging, and other materials as assigned by the Senior Director of External Affairs.
  5. Manage local third-party PR firms the Museum contracts and, in collaboration with the Senior Director of External Affairs, work with a national third-party PR firm to secure national coverage of Museum exhibitions and initiatives.
  6. Develop materials to educate and support staff on communications and PR practices, including institutional style guides, media trainings for designated spokespeople, and talking points for media interviews.
  7. In collaboration with the Senior Director of External Affairs, develop effective crisis communications procedures and materials, including PDQs, frontline talking points, and other materials as assigned.
  8. Provide copywriting support for select marketing materials, such as brochures, flyers, emails, and advertisements that build brand awareness and expand audience and donor engagement.
  9. Collaborate with the Senior Director of External Affairs on the annual donor impact report and the annual State of the Museum.
  10. Collaborate with the Senior Director of External Affairs in developing and overseeing the Museum’s annual communications and PR budget of approximately $200,000+ annually.
  11. Support internal communications functions, including drafting memos, staff updates, and other communications in support of Human Resources.
  12. Represent Phoenix Art Museum in the community with professionalism.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  1. Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field preferred.
  2. Minimum three years’ progressively responsible communications and PR experience, with a proven track record of success in a highly dynamic environment.

Skill and ability to:

  1. Build and manage communications and PR campaigns.
  2. Write press releases and media alerts.
  3. Pitch to and build relationships with journalists that lead to regular secured coverage.
  4. Communicate effectively and present complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner, both verbally and in writing.
  5. Write communications materials on tight deadline with high attention to accuracy and detail.
  6. Work some early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as press requests require.
  7. Represent Phoenix Art Museum in a professional manner among community partners, visitors, staff, and volunteers.

Knowledge of:

  1. Crisis communications best practices.
  2. Managing multiple projects in a timely manner and within budget, while building strong and collaborative working relationships with individuals across the organization.
  3. Budgeting and project management practices.
  4. Managing contractors and third-party agencies through various channels of communication, including but not limited to telephone communications, personal interaction, and written communication.
