Description

Under the guidance of a full-time employee in the Office of Natural Lands Management (State Parks, Forests, and Historic Sites), review and respond to data requests using information in the Natural Heritage Biotics database. Responsibilities include transferring information from text and map-based requests into a GIS-based model, generating reports on rare species (plants and animals) and ecological communities at specified sites, and preparing standardized responses with the results.

Specific to Position

Under the supervision of a GIS Specialist, the successful candidate will be responsible for processing data request submittals to the Office of Natural Lands Management/NJ Natural Heritage Program and generating reports on occurrences of endangered or threatened plant and animal species, as well as rare or unique ecological communities. This position requires strictly office-based work, including reviewing and responding to submitted Natural Heritage Data Request Forms, coordinating electronically and via telephone with the public, and managing GIS data. The selected candidate will execute GIS-based tools to perform queries on various geographic datasets, enter text-based information into a custom database, generate sub-reports, and organize finalized reports. Additionally, they will email finalized reports and attachments to requestors.

Preferred Skill Set

Possesses a strong grasp of biodiversity components and the ecological processes that support natural communities and species habitats. Possesses a solid understanding of basic theory used in electronic GIS systems and has hands-on experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro. Skills in executing fundamental GIS geoprocessing tasks and ensuring efficient spatial data management. Additionally, demonstrates proficiency in electronic file and data management, maintaining organization and accessibility of crucial information. Highly self-motivated and equipped with strong general organizational skills, the position will work independently with minimal supervision once properly trained.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in botany, plant ecology, natural resources or related environmental field.

Operation of a state vehicle will require appointee to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
